To celebrate the opening of Vangarde Shopping Park, the Lord Mayor of York today (9 April) unveiled the public art that has been exclusively created for the new retail park in York.
The Right Honourable the Lord Mayor of York, Councillor Julie Gunnell unveiled the artwork specifically designed by Yorkshire artists for Vangarde Shopping Park on Wednesday 9 April. The art has been inspired by the history and environment surrounding Vangarde Shopping Park and has been created by Tony and Aprille Broomhead of Broomheads Homemade and Dan Savage.
The shopping park will feature artwork across the whole site. Placed around the circumference of the park will be boats with a viewing deck, offering shoppers a place to rest and contemplate the simpler things in life. An interactive space, inspired by the reeds on the site has been installed in the piazza area, which includes three patterned pebbles incorporating images gathered from community workshops. Finally two sculptural pieces, which are inspired by ancient hedgerow and textile printing methods, have been designed to visually connect the historic site with its new use.
Richard France, Managing Director of the Oakgate Group, commented: “The public art element is an integral and fun part of the scheme and has been specifically commissioned for the shopping park. The art can be found all around the Vangarde site and has drawn its inspiration from the historic and environmental elements of the site.
“In addition, newt tunnels have been built to ensure that the Great Crested Newts, that now share their home with John Lewis, Next and M&S, are protected on site. Therefore, we’ve created newt trails for adults and children to follow as they move around the shopping park.”
Vangarde Shopping Park officially opens on Thursday 10 April at 9am and will be home to York’s first John Lewis department store, the region’s largest M&S store and a state-of-the-art Next store. Restaurants including Giraffe, Costa Coffee, Prezzo, Ed’s Easy Diner, Nando’s and Frankie & Benny’s will open in May/June 2014.
